FCAHS Graduation Ceremony Update

The following is a letter from Fox Chapel Area High School Lead Principal Michael Hower, Ed.D., that was sent to all Class of 2020 parents and guardians on June 17, 2020.

To All 2020 Graduates and Parents,

First and foremost, congratulations to you on an amazing accomplishment!  As a learning community, you rallied together to show support, flexibility, and commitment. For this, I thank you.

In previous communications, we reserved the possibility of hosting a full graduation ceremony in July or August; however, given the current CDC guidelines and Pennsylvania Department of Health recommendations, we will not be pursuing this event for all graduates and families. From our perspective, we do not want to jeopardize the health and well-being of our students and families by hosting an event of more than 2,000 people. I am sending this message with a heavy heart. Even though it was so nice to see everyone on June 7 for our individual graduation ceremony, we will miss celebrating with everyone as a class.

We are, however, having ongoing discussions about potentially having an optional picnic the first weekend in August to celebrate with our graduates one last time. We may not be able to do this as well. We are currently monitoring the situation and will post information on our website by July 10 to indicate whether this event will take place. With the uncertainty that lies ahead, we do not want to communicate the scheduling of this event, then cancel.  So, unfortunately, we will have to remain flexible moving forward.

Regardless, I want to, again, express my gratitude to you as students.  You have demonstrated leadership, class, and resiliency. I also want to thank the parents, guardians, and community members for your unwavering love and support for our students during this unbelievably hard time.

Take care, and stay well.

All the best,

Michael Hower
