Plans for End-of-the-Year Celebrations

The Fox Chapel Area School District understands the importance of our end-of-the-year events and the important milestones that they celebrate.

Here is how we plan to carry on those traditions though we're unable to be together.

Elementary

We wanted to let you know that each of the elementary schools are working with building staff and/or parent-teacher organizations to develop virtual end-of-the-year celebrations for fifth-grade students.

We are looking forward to celebrating their accomplishments as they leave elementary school and prepare to move on to Dorseyville Middle School.

We also wanted to let you know that school-issued Chromebooks and internet devices will be collected in the fall, and that more information pertaining to locker clean-out/personal item pickup will be forthcoming.

Additionally, we have some information from Dorseyville Middle School to share.

Fifth-Grade Move Up Day
A video will be prepared for incoming fifth-graders and posted to the DMS website. This video will provide a virtual tour of the building to give students an opportunity to acquaint themselves with DMS. The video will also include a Q&A/advice session from current sixth-graders that may be helpful for students entering sixth grade next year.

Fifth-Grade Parent Orientation
The DMS Fifth-Grade Parent Orientation information will be presented in an online format for parents and students to view. A variety of screencast presentations will walk parents and students through information that may be helpful as students transition to DMS. These screencast presentations will be posted on the DMS website in May.

DMS Open Tours in August*
Currently, DMS is still planning to hold its annual “Open Tours” for incoming sixth-graders and new students during the second week of August. This is a day intended for students and parents to have the opportunity to become comfortable with the building and new surroundings. Students will be given access to their schedules so that they can familiarize themselves with room locations and other areas of the building that may be of interest. *This event is subject to state and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines that are being followed for the safety of our students and staff.

DMS

Talent Show
Efforts are being made to ensure that students (and staff) are able to showcase their talents via a DMS talent show video. Students (with parent permission), along with DMS staff members, will have an opportunity to submit a video of their talents. A compilation video will be shared with the DMS community once all videos have been collected and compiled, sometime toward the end of May or the beginning of June.

End-of-Year Teacher Video to our DMS Students
An end-of-year video will be created and shared with DMS students and families. This video will capture our well-wishes for the students as they enter summer break. We hope that this video will bring smiles to the faces of everyone!

End-of-Year Awards
Each year, teams at DMS select students to receive “Team Scholar Awards” for the academic school year. Students who demonstrate strength in a particular area or type of intelligence are nominated by their team teachers. These awards are based on the theory of multiple intelligences, developed in 1983 by Dr. Howard Gardner, professor of education at Harvard University. Dr. Gardner’s theory suggests the traditional notion of intelligence, based on IQ testing, is far too limited. Instead, Dr. Gardner proposes seven different intelligences to account for a broader range of human potential in children and adults. These awards will be created and sent via mail in June to the students who are selected.

Belongings in Lockers/Classrooms
A plan is being devised for students to pick up belongings at school. More information will be forthcoming.

Technology Device Returns
School-issued iPads and wireless internet devices will be collected in the fall.
