The Fox Chapel Area School District will host a Spanish Immersion open house from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Feb. 26 at Kerr Elementary School. Attendees will learn about the Spanish Immersion program, tour the new Kerr Elementary School, and visit the Spanish Immersion classroom.
The Spanish Immersion program will mark its second year during the 2020-2021 school term. It debuted at the brand-new Kerr Elementary School during the 2019-2020 school year and currently has 25 first-grade students. Fox Chapel Area's state-of-the-art Spanish Immersion classroom is the only one of its kind in Western Pennsylvania.
In 2020-2021, the current first graders enrolled in the class will move to the second grade Spanish Immersion classroom, and the district will take in a new class of first-graders. The 2020-2021 program for first-graders will be open to current kindergartners already enrolled in the district. The program is open to students from across the district. All students who enter the Spanish Immersion program will attend school at Kerr Elementary. Transportation will be provided.
The students enrolled in the Spanish Immersion classroom spend the majority of their school day listening, speaking, and learning core subjects in Spanish, as 80 to 100 percent of the instruction is provided in Spanish. Special classes, such as art, music, and gym are in English, as is lunch and recess. Eventually, the program will be first grade through fifth grade.
Applications for the Spanish Immersion program will be accepted March 2 to April 17. Enrollment is limited, and students will be chosen by a random selection process.
