Meet Jacqueline Decker
Jacqueline Decker is Hartwood Elementary School's new guidance counselor.
We asked Ms. Decker a few questions to get to know her better.
What has been your favorite part about Fox Chapel Area so far?
Who was your favorite teacher growing up, and why?
My favorite teacher growing up was my fifth-grade teacher, Miss Olexa. She made learning fun, and I felt like she wanted what was best for each and every student in her class. She is one of the reasons that I wanted to go into education, in the hopes I could encourage my students like she encouraged me.
What led you to a career in education?
I grew up with both of my parents in education, but it wasn't until I traveled to Kenya, in East Africa, on an international internship that I realized my dream of becoming a school counselor. It was there that I worked with an orphanage and shadowed a school counselor. In those moments, I discovered school counseling was a perfect career fit for me.
Do you have a favorite cafeteria food?
I am always a fan of pizza. You can never go wrong with pizza!
On the weekends, what can you be found doing?
On the weekends, I can normally be found outside on a nice day or spending time with my friends. I also really enjoy traveling, so any chance I get to take a weekend getaway, I do it!
What's one thing that people would be surprised to know about you?
Something surprising is that I spent my 16th birthday in three countries and three continents. I like to use this as my fun fact!
Favorite vacation destination?
My favorite vacation destination would be anywhere warm and near water! I grew up as a swimmer and love being able to hang out poolside.
What three things are always in your refrigerator?
Honestly, yogurt, carrots, and cheese. I clearly don't have very exotic tastes. Ha!
What's the one thing you can't live without?
My family. I would be lost without them!
If you could have anyone narrate your life, who would it be?
I really like Emma Stone. I think she could narrate my life with some funny one-liners and add comic relief!
