Seat Belts on School Buses
-
The Board of School Directors of the Fox Chapel Area School District has decided that all buses will be equipped with seat belts and 28” high seat backs. All of the large school buses used in our district are now equipped with these special safety features.
The Bus Seat Belts FAQ will address some of the questions that you or your child may have regarding seat belts on school buses. It will also provide your childwith the basic procedures he or she will need to know.
Please read and review this information. Parents will especially want to discuss this with their younger school age children. Please reinforce the importance of using seatbelts by buckling up in your family car every day.
If you have any additional questions, please call ABC Transit at 412-828-9000.
Bus Seat Belts FAQ
-
What type of seat belts have been installed?
Basically the same type that you now have in your personal car. They are lap seat belts, with a push button release.
-
Why do we need seat belts on school buses?
Although the school bus is statistically the safest mode of surface transportation, this equipment will provide an added margin of safety, especially in the event of a side or rear impact collision, or during a sudden stop or swerve.
-
How do I adjust my school bus seat belt?
Just the same as in the family car. First, sit all the way back on the seat and locate the two ends of your seat belt - the metal clasp and the buckle. Pull the seat belt across your lap (not vour stomach) and push the clasp into the buckle until you hear it click. Adjust the seat belt so it is comfortable and snug across your lap. In order to release the belt, simply press the release button located in the middle of the buckle.
-
How will seat belts affect student seating on the bus?
When only two students are sharing a seat, students should use the two outside seating positions.
-
What should I do with my belongings while I'm buckling or adjusting my seat belt?
You may temporarily place your belongings on the floor beneath your seat, or have the person sitting next to you hold them. As always, you should not bring anything on board a bus that can't be comfortably placed on your lap without affecting the safety and comfort of other passengers. Nothing is to be placed inthe center aisle.
-
What should I do if my seat belt does not operate properly?
Please notify your bus driver as soon as possible. He or she will report this to the proper person so the seat belt can be repaired.
-
How should I arrange my seat belt prior to leaving the bus?
Please make sure that your seat belt is laying fully extended on your seat when you leave the bus. It should not be left bunched or buckled under the seat or hanging in the aisle. This is a matter of courtesy and safety for other students who will be riding the bus. The latest model school bus now has retractable seat belts.
-
Do I need to use my seat belt on field trips too?
Yes. The rule is that you are expected to use the seat belt every time you ride the bus.
