Students Candidates in Presidential Scholars Program

Two Fox Chapel Area High School seniors, Rama Godse and Samuel Waxman, have been named candidates in the 2015 United States Presidential Scholars Program. Approximately 3,900 students from across the United States, and 101 from Pennsylvania, have been named candidates in this year's program.

Inclusion in the Presidential Scholars Program, now in its 51st year, is one of the highest honors bestowed upon graduating high school seniors. Students are initially selected for the program based on their SAT or ACT exam scores. The candidates must then complete an application which includes essays, self-assessments, secondary school reports, and transcripts. Candidates are evaluated based on their academic achievement, personal characteristics, leadership and service activities, and the quality and content of their essay. About 560 students will be selected as Semifinalists in the program and then students chosen as Scholars will be notified in May. Each year up to 141 students are named Presidential Scholars (up to 121 academic scholars and up to 20 arts scholars). Scholars will be invited to Washington, D.C., in June for an expense-paid trip to meet with government officials, educators, authors, musicians, scientists, and other accomplished people. They will also receive the U.S. Presidential Scholars Medallion at a special recognition ceremony sponsored by the White House.
