Alum Named Captain of Pitt Football Team

Quintin Wirginis has another accolade to add to his long list of accomplishments: Pitt football captain.

Wirginis, a senior linebacker for the Panthers, graduated from Fox Chapel Area High School in 2014. The other two captains selected Friday at Pitt’s annual Football Kickoff Luncheon also are WPIAL products — offensive lineman Alex Bookser from Mt. Lebanon and defensive back Dennis Briggs from Shady Side Academy.

“I was surrounded by good, hard-working coaches and teammates (in high school). Playing for Fox Chapel Area also gave me an opportunity to compete against some of the best competition in the WPIAL and PIAA, and that prepared me for the level I’m playing at today,” Wirginis said in July.

After missing the entire 2017 season due to injury, Wirginis is expected to anchor the Panthers’ linebacking corps. In three seasons with the Panthers, Wirginis has tallied 50 tackles — including 4.5 tackles for loss — 4.0 sacks, and a fumble recovery.

The Panthers open their season at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, September 1, against Albany at Heinz Field.
