Students Win Awards in State Science Competition
Several Fox Chapel Area School District students recently won awards at the 83rd Annual State Meeting of the Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science (PJAS). Fox Chapel Area first place state winners were senior Austin Fisher; junior Albert Liu; sophomores Zachary Lakkis and Ji-Yool Moon; freshmen Hanna Chen, Rajeev Godse, Anzu Sekikawa, and Ameya Velankar; eighth graders Amulya Garimella, Anthony Nguyen, and Vinisha Sant; and seventh graders Mona Gerges and Theodor Urban. Second place winners were sophomores Arnav Gupta, Theresa Heidenreich, and Ziya Xu and eighth graders Catherine Heidenreich and Elizabeth Schwartzman. Additionally, Albert received a Director’s Award and a Perfect Score Award. Ameya and Amulya also each received a Perfect Score Award.
The participating Fox Chapel Area High School and Dorseyville Middle School students were among approximately 3,000 students in grades seven-twelve who participated in the state PJAS competition. Each researched their science projects for several months and was required to give an oral presentation on his or her science project in front of a panel of judges.
The state competition was held at Penn State University (Main Campus) May 14-16, 2017. All of the Fox Chapel Area students participating at the state level were named first place winners at the 83rd Annual Region 7 Meeting of the PJAS in February.
