Students Place in Forensic Tournament - Six Qualify for Nationals

Eleven Fox Chapel Area High School students recently placed in their events at the Pittsburgh Diocesan Qualifying Tournament for the National Catholic Forensic League Grand National Championship Tournament.

Senior Ellen Pil won third place in Student Congress, senior Madeleine Doerr won fourth place in Original Oratory, the team of senior Jonathan Monroe and junior Sara Puthenpurayil won fourth place in Policy Debate, and the team of seniors Mihir Garimella and Darwin Leuba won fifth place in Policy Debate. All six of these students have advanced to represent the Pittsburgh Diocese at the Grand National Championship Tournament May 26-28, 2017, in Louisville, Kentucky.

Three students will serve as alternates to the national championships. Seniors Joshua Cagan and Austin Fisher won sixth place in Duo Interpretation and are the first alternates, and freshman Jonathan Rodrigues won seventh place in Extemporaneous Speaking and is the second alternate. Additionally, at the tournament, senior Jeremy Rodrigues and sophomore Jonah Green were both recognized as Student Congress Super Session Senators and they advanced to the final round of competition.

The Pittsburgh Diocese Catholic Forensic League national-qualifying tournament was held March 4 at Fort Couch Middle School in the Upper St. Clair School District. Approximately 190 students from 20 high schools from the Pittsburgh region participated in the tournament.
