Welcome to O'Hara Elementary School. While the building itself is an impressive structure with well-manicured grounds, it is our school's inner beauty that makes O'Hara most special. 
The O'Hara Community Raises $3,623 for Haitian Victims Friday, January 22nd was "Hats for Haiti Day." O'Hara parents, students and staff members donated $3623.60 for the victims of the recent earthquake. Students wore their favorite hat for the day with a donation to the Haitian Relief Effort. In addition, students brought in supplies such as soap, wash rags, Band-Aides, etc. and filled up approximately 100 large buckets that were sent to Haiti. Buckets were graciously donated by Lowes and Sherwin Williams. |

| Noted Author Visits O'Hara On February 2nd, Karen Lynn Williams, noted children's author visited O'Hara. Many of Mrs. Williams books deal with difficulties of children in developing countries. Mrs. Williams presented two assemblies. At the assembly for grades K, 1 and 2 she read portions of her new book, "A Beach Tail" and told our children about Galimotos. At the assembly for grades 3, 4 and 5 Mrs. Williams explained her writing process. Mrs. Beth Ivins, O'Hara kindergarten teacher, presented Mrs. WIlliams with a check for $3,623 from our "Hats for Haiti" Day which will go to the Albert Schweitzer Hospital in Haiti. On Mrs. Williams' website she states that from 1990-93, "I lived in Deschapelles, Haiti at the Hôpital Albert Schweitzer. My husband Steve was a doctor in the district hospital. I continued to write and volunteer in the hospital. " |
 2010-2011 Kindergarten Registration/Parent Orientation Registration of children who will enter kindergarten in the fall of 2010 is scheduled in the Fox Chapel Area schools during the month of March. Orientation meetings to acquaint parents with the kindergarten program and registration process are also scheduled during March. Children must be five years of age on or before September 1 to be admitted to kindergarten and age six by September 1 for first grade in the 2010-2011 school year. A certificate of birth date, immunization records, two proofs of residency, and a photo id must be presented for registration. A child will not be officially registered in the school until all of these items are presented.

According to Pennsylvania Department of Health regulations, children must be immunized with the following before being admitted to kindergarten: • Diphtheria and Tetanus (4 doses, including 1 after the child's fourth birthday); • Polio - OPV or IPV (3 doses); • Measles and Mumps on or after the child's first birthday (2 doses); • Rubella on or after the child's first birthday (1 dose); • Hepatitis B (3 doses); and • Varicella (chicken pox) immunity, either from vaccination (2 doses), history of disease (written statement from physician indicating year and month of disease), or laboratory testing.
Persons having medical or religious objections to these immunizations should contact the school nurse. Children entering kindergarten are also required to have a physical and dental examination. These exams may be done through the school or through a child's personal physician, no sooner than one year prior to entrance into kindergarten.
The schedule for new kindergarten parent orientation meetings and kindergarten registration is as follows: Parent Orientation Meeting: March 9, 2010 - O'Hara Elementary School Auditorium - 6:30-7:30 p.m. Registration: March 17, 2010 - O'Hara Elementary School Commons Area - 8:30 a.m.-12 noon & 1-3:30 p.m.
All parents are urged to attend the scheduled orientation and registration sessions. Parents who are unable to attend the orientation session or registration session for any reason should contact the building principal to make alternate arrangements. Incoming kindergarten families are also encouraged to sign up for the winter or spring Family Literacy Center class sessions by calling 412/696-0065.
O’Hara will hold an orientation for incoming kindergarten students prior to the beginning of the 2010-2011 school year.

| O'Hara Elementary Visits Bangalore, India O’Hara 5th grade student, Mihir Garimella recently traveled to Bangalore, India to visit family members. O’Hara Elementary is using technology to help make the world a little smaller. So, on Monday, December 21st, Mrs. Rimmel’s 5th grade class utilized the Internet software Skype to talk to Mihir. Skype is social networking software for making free calls over the Internet to anyone else who also has Skype installed on their computer. The students at O’Hara made the Skype connection at 10:30 am Pittsburgh time, and talked to Mihir at 9:30 pm, India time. With the help of Skype, all of Mrs. Rimmel’s students were able to see and talk to Mihir, even though he was more than 8,400 miles away. |
