2010-2011 Kindergarten Registration/Parent Orientation

Registration of children who will enter kindergarten in the fall of 2010 is scheduled in the Fox Chapel Area schools during the month of March.  Orientation meetings to acquaint parents with the kindergarten program and registration process are also scheduled during March.

Children must be five years of age on or before September 1 to be admitted to kindergarten and age six by September 1 for first grade in the 2010-2011 school year.  A certificate of birth date, immunization records, two proofs of residency, and a photo id must be presented for registration.  A child will not be officially registered in the school until all of these items are presented.

According to Pennsylvania Department of Health regulations, children must be immunized with the following before being admitted to kindergarten:

• Diphtheria and Tetanus (4 doses, including 1 after the child's fourth birthday);
• Polio - OPV or IPV (3 doses);
• Measles and Mumps on or after the child's first birthday (2 doses);
• Rubella on or after the child's first birthday (1 dose);
• Hepatitis B (3 doses); and
• Varicella (chicken pox) immunity, either from vaccination (2 doses), history of disease (written statement from physician indicating year and month of disease), or laboratory testing.

Persons having medical or religious objections to these immunizations should contact the school nurse.  Children entering kindergarten are also required to have a physical and dental examination.  These exams may be done through the school or through a child's personal physician, no sooner than one year prior to entrance into kindergarten.

The schedule for new kindergarten parent orientation meetings and kindergarten registration is as follows:
Parent Orientation Meeting:  March 9, 2010 - O'Hara Elementary School Auditorium - 6:30-7:30 p.m.
Registration:  March 17, 2010 - O'Hara Elementary School Commons Area - 8:30 a.m.-12 noon & 1-3:30 p.m.

All parents are urged to attend the scheduled orientation and registration sessions.  Parents who are unable to attend the orientation session or registration session for any reason should contact the building principal to make alternate arrangements.  Incoming kindergarten families are also encouraged to sign up for the winter or spring Family Literacy Center class sessions by calling 412/696-0065.

O’Hara will hold an orientation for incoming kindergarten students prior to the beginning of the 2010-2011 school year.

O'Hara Raises more than $21,500

for the American Heart Association

Jump Rope for Heart was another great success this year!  The O'Hara students participated in many different jump rope and basketball activities to get their hearts pumping and they learned about the importance of healthy living.  In addition to their physical efforts, our students raised an amazing $5,361.00 to donate to the American Heart Association and help those with heart conditions!  Over the past 3 years we have raised over $21,575; what a phenomenal job!  Our O'Hara family is truly making a difference with the American Heart Association.  Way to go O'Hara!

 O'Hara Elementary Visits Bangalore, India

O’Hara 5th grade student, Mihir Garimella recently traveled to Bangalore, India to visit family members. O’Hara Elementary is using technology to help make the world a little smaller. So, just before the holiday break, Mrs. Rimmel’s 5th grade class utilized the Internet software Skype to talk to Mihir. Skype is social networking software for making free calls over the Internet to anyone else who also has Skype installed on their computer. The students at O’Hara made the Skype connection at 10:30 am Pittsburgh time, and talked to Mihir at 9:30 pm, India time. With the help of Skype, all of Mrs. Rimmel’s students were able to see and talk to Mihir, even though he was more than 8,400 miles away.
