DMS Students to Help Haiti
Kids in HaitiDorseyville Middle School students are holding a drive to help the earthquake victims of Haiti. Each Homebase (homeroom) has received a five-gallon bucket that the students and staff will fill with toiletry items. To raise awareness for the project, the Dorseyville Middle School Student Council also requested that the social studies teachers make an assignment for the students to watch some news footage and write a reflection paper about Haiti so that they could all have a better understanding of the conditions there.

District Gala

Our community is coming together for one of the year’s most talked-about events. We anticipate that more than 1000 community members will join us at the Heinz Field ballroom for Dancin’ in the Endzone!

For our first ever cooperative districtwide fundraiser, to be held May 1, 2010, we’ve engaged the support of dozens of community leaders, including PTO and PTA officers and representatives. Plans for the evening include food and drinks, a Motown band, auctions and a raffle.

Proceeds will benefit the Dorseyville Middle School Challenge Technology Fund and initiatives of the PTA/PTO organizations at each building in the school district. We are committed to placing interactive technology in 50 core classrooms at the middle school level – a plan that will ensure Fox Chapel Area students have enhanced access to 21st century educational technology at all grade levels. The Board of School Directors has placed $100,000 in the budget in support of this initiative. Our challenge is to at least double that amount by raising matching funds through this event.

Most of all, this event is about bringing our communities, friends, and neighbors together to celebrate making a great school district even better!

Tickets go on sale in January, we hope to see you there!  Visit the district web site for more information.

Heart Sale

The Health and Wellness Team is sponsoring a heart sale during all lunches starting this Friday in support of the American Heart Association.  Hearts can be purchased in memory of or in support of a loved one.  Students can purchase hearts for 25 cents a piece.  Flat donations will also be accepted at this time.  The heart sale will last until Thursday, Feb. 11.  Please help to support this worthy cause!

Students will also be participating in jump rope and hoops activities in physical education classes throughout the week to promote healthy heart awareness.

Geography Bee

The 2010 DMS Geography Bee was concluded on Wednesday, January 27.  Classroom bees had identified approximately 90 semi-finalists from all three grade levels. After a lengthy contest, three grade level winners were selected.
They are:   Ana S., Frank L., and Colin M.

In the School Championship Round,  Frank Lou emerged as the top geography student for DMS.   Frank has taken a written test which was submitted to the National Geographic Society for scoring.  100 students who qualify will be selected to attend the State Finals in Harrisburg this spring. Congratulations to all participants.
