High School Students Design Bench & Mosaic for Fairview Elementary
Earlier this past school year, two Fox Chapel Area High School students designed and created a special bench for the Fairview Elementary School nurse's office. The students are 2017-2018 junior Dominick Zacharias and 2017-2018 sophomore Tyree Searcy. The students designed and built the bench at the request of Fairview Elementary School nurse Mary Lou Balkey, who retired at the end of the 2017-2018 school year. Near the beginning of the school year, she contacted high school technology education department head and teacher Mitch Palucis and asked if someone could build a bench for the nurse's office that also provided a place to store some items. Technology education teacher Joe Gass then approached the students in his advanced materials processing class and Dominick and Tyree both expressed interest in working on the project. It was of particular interest to Dominick as he had attended Fairview Elementary School. Additionally, Dominick's younger brother attends Fairview.
Both students worked really hard from start to finish on the bench, and creating, designing, and building the bench took a great deal of time and planning. They researched ideas, Dominick visited Fairview to talk with the nurse and school principal about what they had in mind, and then they both designed it, fabricated parts, cut them out, and put it together.
Additionally, three of our high school art students created a mosaic for Fairview Elementary School this past school year. The students were 2018 graduates Olivia Bernacki, Kate Goodwin, and Kate Livingston, and all three were in the advanced Jewelry and Glass Level IV class under the instruction of art teacher Ron Frank. Two of the three students who worked on the mosaic had attended Fairview Elementary School.
