Students Place in State-Qualifying Forensic Tournament
Thirteen Fox Chapel Area High School students recently placed in the Pennsylvania High School Speech League’s (PHSSL) District 2 state championship-qualifying tournament. The team of seniors Sara Puthenpurayil and Albert Liu won first place and qualified to represent the region at the PHSSL State Tournament. Additionally, the following students will serve as alternates to the state championships: sophomore Rajeev Godse placed third in Lincoln-Douglas Debate and is the first alternate to the state tournament; sophomore Hanna Chen placed fourth in Extemporaneous Speaking and is the second alternate to states; junior Jonah Green won fifth place in the Senate and is the second alternate to the state championships; and the team of seniors Karissa Becer and Tom Ng and sophomore Boomba Nishikawa placed fifth in Parliamentary Debate and is the second alternate team to states. The state tournament will be held March 16 & 17, 2018, at Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania.
The following five students also placed at the tournament: junior Grace Stasolla won fifth place in Poetry; sophomore Evan Gu placed fifth in Extemporaneous Speaking; freshman Jackson Romero won fifth place in Lincoln-Douglas Debate; and the team of sophomores Jackson Boychuk and J. Oliver Choo won fifth place in Public Forum Debate.
Approximately 180 students representing 14 high schools from Allegheny, Beaver, and Butler counties competed in the District 2 state-qualifying tournament. The tournament was held February 24 at Pine-Richland High School.
